Liverpool Fans Against Hicks

Public protests

It needs to be emphasised that protest isn’t a common course of action for fans of this club.  Tony Barrett in the Liverpool Echo explains it as follows:

In the previous 113 years of its existence, Liverpool FC had never been subject to a single
demonstration by its fans.

In the last eight months alone there have been three – all of which have occurred while
Hicks and Gillett have acted as self-styled club “custodians”.

The first, a display of outrage over farcical ticketing arrangements for the Champions
League final in Athens, was anything but their fault and no-one was suggesting it was,
either, at the time or since.

But the following two demonstrations – the “Save Rafa” march prior to the Porto match in
November and tonight’s – undoubtedly have their roots in public disquiet about the way one
of sport’s finest institutions is being run.

But this isn’t a ‘common’ situation that Liverpool fans are faced with – it’s taken Tom Hicks and his lies and media outbursts to illicit such negative reaction.

The following are some images of the protests by Liverpool fans against the current ownership:

Dubai SOS

Don't Hicks It

Yanks Out

Texan 2Hats

Planks

Taxi

In addition, this YouTube clip is an example of one of the organised demonstrations against the owners (and Hicks in particular).  The lyrics for the two songs are:

They don’t care about Rafa,
They don’t care about the fans,
Liverpool Football Club,
Is in the wrong hands.

Get out of our club,
Get out of our club,
You lying bastards,
Get out of our club.

  1. Incidentally, the news today that Hicks is postponing his ‘Glorypark’ development may lend some weight to the argument against the “spiralling costs” claim (in the ‘Stadium’ post):

In particular, the following quote from the Echo:

“When my family purchased the Rangers, we pledged to invest in a development around the Ballpark. We are still committed to doing that, but we may have to re-examine what should be built and what actually can be built if the market conditions continue.”

  4. The first one wasn’t their fault – but you take a lot of words to tell us that!

The second one was because of Gillett and Parry, thanks in part to Foster, and Hicks was effectively forced to choose between his co-owner and his manager. He made the wrong choice first, but eventually put that right and chose the manager. A version of events you’ll not hear anywhere else, but you go and ask George Gillett or Rick Parry about this, face-to-face, and watch those shifty eyes.

The third one was intertwined with the second one, and with the propaganda put out by those seeking to see Hicks forced out, not for the good of the club, but for their own self-interests.

2000 fans protested, a good number, but out of 40,000+ at the games? Out of how many fans overall?

A lot of fans have actually read between the lines of a media that enjoys seeing LFC fans suffer.

I’ve changed the order, so hopefully that is more acceptable to you!
